How screwed up can a social worker get? Can heartbreak be so painful that it changes our DNA? A Spirit’s Face removes the masks hiding our deepest scars, to answer these questions. Hunter Stowe, a gifted Aboriginal palliative care worker more comfortable with death than life, somehow connects with Jake Montour, a dorky Aboriginal addictions counsellor struggling with anxiety disorder.

How screwed up can a social worker get? Can heartbreak be so painful that it changes our DNA?

It’s a miracle that two prickly, burned out professionals have found love; it’s a tragedy that they’ve found it while gene-altering trauma masks their happiness behind stories of woe. When a desperate Jake asks Hunter to breach her professional ethics, neither of them realize how two words will change them, all the way down to cell level: mask’s off.
