Native Earth Performing Arts Seeks Artistic Director

Canada’s oldest professional Aboriginal theatre is looking for an artist with a vision to lead the company into the next decade.

In the 28 years since it was created, Native Earth Performing Arts has contributed to the development of a community of artists, a body of work, and an international profile for Aboriginal playwrights. The company has produced such landmark productions as Tomson Highway’s The Rez Sisters, Marie Clements’ The Unnatural and Accidental Women, Cheyikwe Performance’s the place between, Darrell Dennis’ Tales of An Urban Indian and, with the National Arts Centre, Death of a Chief, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.

Run according to the seven traditional values of courage, generosity, tolerance, strength of character, patience, humility, and wisdom, the company serves a constituency of emerging and established artists, a national theatre community, and a global network of artists and academics, and has achieved an international reputation as a leader in Indigenous practice.  In recent years, the company has produced a season in Toronto, toured regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The Artistic Director

  • Seeks out and selects works for the stage that reflect the Aboriginal experience in Canada
  • Seeks out and supports the development of new young voices for the stage
  • Oversees a training program for young professional theatre practitioners
  • Leads a team of working artists in the creation of new work
  • Articulates the role of the company in the cultural fabric of the country
  • Guides the company through the next stage of its growth

Responsibilities:

Artistic

  • Select season and all artistic programming
  • Oversee the recruitment and hiring of artists
  • Orient all personnel regarding the theatre’s mandate, goals and values
  • Participate in the company’s activities through his or her artistic practice

Administrative

  • Write grant applications and proposals for private and public funding
  • Work with the General Manager to create accurate and realistic budgets for every aspect of the programming of the company
  • Implement an evolving Strategic Plan

Management

  • Convey to all staff the theme of all works so that they can promote, market, and represent the work in appropriate ways
  • Provide leadership through clear communication
  • Participate with the general manager in the performance review of all staff

Representation

  • Participate in the artistic and cultural communities through advocacy, committee work, panels, workshops, etc.
  • Participate in public events that will raise the profile of the company, Aboriginal theatre, and Aboriginal theatre artists.
