“Summer Bressette is Anishinaabe from Kettle and Stony Point First Nation. She is an emerging playwright – her first play “”Love Song for the Thunderbirds”” debuted at the Grand Theatre in 2021 for their Grand Re-Opening Festival. Summer is also an educator and curator who is passionate about building kinship through storytelling.
Summer’s Anishinaabe name is Niiobinesiik, Four Thunderbirds, and she is lovingly called Niibinoohns (Little Summer) and Jackrabbit by those who know her very well. She is rooted in her family and community stories and takes inspiration from her grandparents and their many visitors who shared laughter and the Anishinaabemowin language around the kitchen table. Through her grandparents Summer came to understand how storytelling builds connection, curiosity, and the courage to persevere land theft, Residential Schools, and the legacy of colonialism.
